How to make a professional CV, step by step

A good CV explains what you can contribute to an employer. Gather your information, choose a clear layout and tailor the content to the vacancy. Vitaevia keeps your information separate from your designs.

1. Collect your information

List your contact details, education, employment, skills and relevant courses. Use a professional email address. A full street address, birth date or photo is not required for every application; decide what you want to share.

In Vitaevia you store this information in a data profile. One profile can be used by several CV versions, so you can reuse your information.

2. Choose a clear layout

Give contact details, education and employment recognisable headings. Put recent experience first unless another order better suits your situation.

Start with a template and check readability. Colours and fonts should support your content. A simple layout can be useful when an employer processes applications automatically.

3. Explain your contribution

Include the employer, dates and main responsibilities for each role. Explain what you organised, improved or delivered. Only include figures you can support.

4. Tailor your CV to the vacancy

Identify the knowledge and experience the employer asks for. Highlight relevant examples and shorten less relevant details. Use vacancy keywords only when they accurately describe your experience.

Create separate versions for different roles or languages. When using shared data profiles, check which other CVs use the same information.

5. Review and export

Check spelling, dates, contact information and page breaks. Open the exported file yourself before sending it.

Vitaevia supports PDF and a text version for ATS systems, among other formats. Use the format requested by the employer. For personal use, your CV files are stored in your connected Google Drive or OneDrive.
